Sustainable community strategy

South Gloucestershire 2026 - A great place to live and work

"by working in partnership, our vision is for everyone who lives and works in South Gloucestershire to fulfil their potential, enjoy an excellent quality of life and support others in their communities whilst protecting the environment."

The strategy has been developed under the guardianship of the South Gloucestershire Partnership, the local strategic partnership set up in 2002. The partnership brings together many different organisations to work with the community to identify and tackle key issues in a more co-ordinated way which enables both strategic decisions and local action. It is committed to addressing the issues that local communities feel are important to their social, economic and environmental well-being in a way which draws on the energy and expertise of all in our communities.

The strategy aims to find the best ways of meeting today’s requirements without damaging the ability of future generations to meet their needs and is committed to making sure that in 2026 South Gloucestershire is a place where everyone is fulfilling their potential and experiencing an excellent quality of life. It is supported by clear priorities set against seven themes that will make the vision a reality.

In developing the new strategy considerable emphasis has been placed on sustainable communities which meet the diverse needs of existing and future residents, are sensitive to their environment and contribute to a high quality of life. It is also recognised that transport and access are key priorities within South Gloucestershire that cut across and are reflected in all of the seven themes.

This strategy sets the direction for the work of the partners and the context for many other strategies and plans. It is aligned to the Local Development Framework and will also set the basis for negotiation of South Gloucestershire’s next Local Area Agreement (due to be published in the summer of 2008). The Local Development Framework will take forward the spatial aspects of the Sustainable Community Strategy and the Local Area Agreement will translate the priorities contained in this document into performance indicators and specific targets. Achievement of these targets will contribute to the improvement of South Gloucestershire’s quality of life.
