Are you really ready for sex?

Are you really ready for sex?

Deciding whether you're ready is a big decision.  You're the only one who can and should make it.

Is it the right time?

There is a legal age of consent (16), but that's not necessarily the perfect age for you to start having sex and there are no rules about how long you have to be going out with someone before you do.  Being ready happens at different times for everyone, but having sex because you have friends that are pressuring you will not be a good decision.

Saying no

You might feel awkward saying no - but going through with it because you're too polite or nervous to say no could be a huge mistake.  If you are not sure and have any doubts at all, or you feel under pressure, put the brakes on and talk about how you feel with your partner.

Saying yes

If you think the time is right, the first time will be loads more special if you talk about it with your partner first.  Tell them how you'd like it to happen and talk about contraception together.

"If you loved me..."

"If you loved me..." lines are emotional blackmail.  It doesn't matter how much you love or like your partner, sex isn't something you have to prove it.  If you both really love each other, you'll respect each other's wishes and if needed, wait until you are both ready.

It's your call

The decision to have sex for the first time should be yours - not something you do to make the other person happy.  You can't have your first time twice, so it's really important to think carefully about it and take it slowly.

If you are still worried then talk to someone.  There are many services that can advise and support you.  It doesn't matter whether you are gay, straight or bisexual, these services are there for you.

No Worries!

This is a South Gloucestershire scheme that makes it easier for young people to access relationship and sexual health services.  Even if you are under 16, all of the services listed in the leaflet are free and confidential (unless you are at risk of harm).  To look at this leaflet please see the 'Read more' section on this page.
