The BIG Spring Clean 2012

LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE in South Gloucestershire

Volunteer groups and residents across South Gloucestershire are once again springing into action to clean up their neighbourhood and open spaces, helping to transform South Gloucestershire as part of the national LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE campaign.

The South Gloucestershire BIG Spring Clean 2012 which runs from 1 March – 30 April is encouraging everyone to join in. Friends, families, neighbours, Parish Councils, community and voluntary groups, church groups, schools, students, youth clubs, scouts, cadets, brownies, guides, and businesses are all taking action against litter!

You can benefit from fresh air and exercise if you take part, while knowing that you are helping reach our ultimate aim: that residents and visitors alike will be able to enjoy South Gloucestershire looking its best!

Many groups are already taking part in voluntary clean-ups during the year, but the BIG Spring Clean gives local people the chance to play an important part in a bigger, co-ordinated campaign. If you care about your local environment, it's the perfect opportunity to venture down to your local open space, woodland, river, park or public garden and take action.

Free gloves, refuse sacks, litter pickers and hoops are on offer to groups who organise a community BIG Spring Clean event.  The council will also arrange to collect all the litter you pick up as long as it is bagged and pick up locations are agreed in advance. Skips are also available where needed.

Register now to claim your free BIG Spring Clean supplies!

If your group is organising an event and you would like to receive free gloves and bags or if your group requires a skip, please register by completing the BIG Spring Clean 2012 booking form, which can be downloaded from the right hand side of this page and returning it to us by 24 February 2012.

Bags and Gloves:
South Gloucestershire Council can provide free bin bags and gloves (please state numbers for adults and/or children).

Litter pickers and hoops:

We can provide the necessary equipment to make picking up litter easier.  There are limited numbers available so advanced booking is required.  The items must be returned after your event is held.

Recycling litter:

Last year a number of groups asked if we could introduce a way to recycle the litter that was picked. So this year we are providing clear bags for recyclable waste. Can your group separate your litter as they collect it? It's much easier and less messy to separate recyclable and non-recyclable litter into different sacks during your tidy up rather than after. To help you recycle please request some clear plastic bags (max 3 per group - one for cans, one for plastic and spare bag). For more information about recycling please visit www.southglos.gov.uk/sortit

Skips:
Where your litter bags can not be collected by our Street Cleansing teams, we can offer to deliver a skip.  You will need to select the size required (mini, 4 yard or 6 yard), together with location details and dates for delivery and collection.  Skips will only be provided for litter collection and not for waste material from buildings. Schools will have to demonstrate that they have a serious litter problem before a skip will be supplied.

Join us and make a difference.

Last year nearly 60 community groups took part in the campaign spending over a staggering 5000 hours cleaning up our local environment.  This year we hope to help just as many, if not more people to make a positive difference, so that South Gloucestershire is an even cleaner and greener place to live.

You can also register your event and access some useful resources on Love Where You Live website (see the link under 'other websites').  This will tell other people living near you that you are organising a local clean up.
