Fromeside - a Youth Centre with a difference!

17 March 2010

Fromeside Youth Centre in Winterbourne is undergoing an exciting and unique transformation to become the place to be for young people in the area thanks to a series of successful bids for funding.

Two years ago the centre opened on Friday nights to give young people in the Winterbourne area a safe and friendly place to go to meet up with friends and socialise. Since opening, the centre has successfully attracted £20,000 from the Community Cashback scheme, £5,000 from the Big Stash fund and £2,000 from the Co-operative Group. Young people using the centre were closely involved in how this money should be spent and it became clear that they wanted a more sophisticated and upmarket venue to be proud of.

The result is a youth centre that is being transformed into something rather special. To date a club room, an American-themed diner, an advice and information room and a tuck shop have been created and work has started on a spa and wellbeing room. Further sources of funding and partnerships are being sought to develop sport provision at the centre.

Therese Gillespie, Director for Children and Young People, said: “Since Fromeside Youth Centre opened almost two years ago, young people in the community have come to really value their facility and have been instrumental in creating a unique and popular youth centre.

“They should be congratulated for their tenacity in helping to attract the funding that has transformed their centre into a place with facilities that many hotels would be proud of!”
