The Love Food Hate Waste campaign aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce food waste. The campaign shows that by doing some easy practical everyday things in the home we can all waste less food, which will ultimately benefit our purses and the environment too.
Every year we throw away around £4 billion worth of food because we cook or prepare too much. This amounts to around 6 million tonnes, and most of this is food that could have been eaten! Each month, the average family throws away £50 worth of food that was bought but not eaten. Simply by not wasting food you could save up to £600 a year.
When food waste is sent to landfill, it rots and releases methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. By thinking more carefully about how we buy, store and cook our food we can all make less waste, saving ourselves money and doing our bit to help the environment.
