Bristol and South Gloucestershire People First

People with learning difficulties

Bristol and South Gloucestershire People First started as a small group of people with learning difficulties at the Whole Baked Café in Bristol.

We wanted:

  • To be in control of our lives
  • Equal rights
  • Proper choices

Now we have:

  • Set up as a charity. We have a Management Committee of 12 people with learning difficulties
  • We have an office
  • We employ a staff team.  Some are people with learning difficulties

We can help with:

Training
We train people who work with People with learning difficulties and other organisations.
We tell them the best way to support us.
We train people with learning difficulties about:
• Self advocacy
• Their rights
• The Valuing People White Paper
• Direct Payments

Making things Plain
We make sure information is accessible.
We run training for organisations to show them how to make information easy to understand .

Side by Side peer advocacy
We are people with learning difficulties who support each other to speak up for our rights.

Person centred planning
We train people with learning difficulties, family carers and paid carers about person centred planning.

Getting ready for Direct Payments
We help people with learning difficulties find out about what Direct Payments can do for them.

Information Days
We run information days for people with learning difficulties about things like health, housing and jobs and rights.

Our Lives – Taking control Project
We are telling our life stories and finding out what happened in the past.

We also have:

A Black Members Group
We meet to talk and share things that are important to us. We meet other Black groups. We go out and have fun too!

A Women’s group
Women get together to talk about things that affect them. They also go out and have a good time.
