Commercial waste

Waste legislation defines the different types of waste according to the process or premises that produces it. This includes  clinical, household, commercial and industrial waste. Such waste is controlled by legislation and its storage, handling, transport and disposal must meet certain legal requirements.

Commercial waste includes waste from premises that are used either wholly or mainly for:

  • trade
  • business
  • sport
  • recreation
  • entertainment

Commercial waste does not include household or industrial waste.

Trade or commercial waste is defined as:
• Waste produced at households by builders and contractors
• Waste collected from a household by commercial organisations for payment
• Waste from a household brought to site by anybody other than the householder
• Waste from rented properties collected by the landlord or his agents
• Waste from business activities conducted at home
• Any other Commercial or Industrial waste as defined by the Controlled Waste Regulations 1992

Business Waste Collection

The Council does not provide its own rubbish or recycling collection service for businesses.

SITA the contractor responsible for collecting the Council’s household waste also has a separate Industrial and Commercial Waste and Recycling Service. To ask for a quote and discuss collection arrangements contact  0870 421 1122.

You may also want to contact other privately operated commercial waste collection companies to compare prices and services. Contact details for alternative commercial waste collection companies in your area can be found in your local telephone directory under Waste Disposal and Recycling Services.

If you would like the Council to arrange a commercial waste collection service on your behalf please note that the Council charges an additional 20 percent administration fee for arranging the service for you.

For the Council to arrange a collection of your commercial waste you will also be expected to separate your waste materials for recycling and composting to the satisfaction of the Council.

Your legal duties

There is a legal 'Duty of Care' on every business to take reasonable steps to make sure their waste is disposed of properly. If you pass waste onto someone else to dispose of, you must ensure they are authorised to take, transport, recycle or dispose of it safely. Contact the Environment Agency on 08708 506506 for more information.

Monitoring and Enforcement

Any site user who cannot satisfy staff that they are a South Gloucestershire resident carrying their own household waste will be refused permission to tip and could face a permanent ban.

If a member of staff is not satisfied with the origin of the waste you may be asked to provide satisfactory evidence of residency. Drivers of vehicles that frequently use the sites will also be required to provide written proof of residency. Householders using hired vans must provide a copy of the hire agreement and proof of residency.

SITA monitors and records images of vehicles and vehicle registrations of all site users which will be shared with the Council and other regulatory bodies in order to enforce these restrictions.

Vehicles attempting to deposit Commercial or Industrial waste at the Sort It!* Centres will be banned and enforcement action taken.
