You can claim housing benefit if you pay rent to a housing association or a private landlord. If you rent your property from a private landlord please see “Local Housing Allowance”.
You will not be able to claim housing benefit if you have savings over £16,000 unless you are aged 60+ AND receiving Guaranteed Pension Credit.
To decide if we can pay you housing benefit we will look at:
- If you have a rental liability
- The level of yours and your partners (if you have one) income
- The level of yours and your partner (if you have one) capital
- If you are a student (please see “What if I am a student?”)
- If you have recently entered the country and have recourse to public funds (please see "What if I have recently entered the country")
