The medieval planned market town of Chipping Sodbury was designated as a Conservation Area on the 27 November 1975 in recognition of its special architectural and historic character and appearance. Its exceptionally well preserved medieval town plan is characterised by long, narrow burgage plots curving gently back from the wide bustling market street with its rich variety of historic buildings.
Chipping Sodbury Conservation Area - Supplementary Planning Document – Adopted 23 Februrary 2009.
A supplementary planning document has been produced for the Chipping Sodbury Conservation Area and is intended to supplement policy L12 of the South Gloucestershire Local Plan. The purpose of the leaflet is to provide guidance and highlight the important features that give the Conservation Area its special character and which should be protected and enhanced. The leaflet and enhancement strategy incorporates many of the issues previously highlighted by local people.
Consultation results
Consultation on a draft leaflet took place in August and September 2008. Many comments were received from local people and other interested parties – mostly in support though some raised concerns regarding the impact of traffic, parking and harm to the character resulting from unsympathetic alterations to shops, traditional buildings and the public realm. (For further details see the Report on Consultation below).
The results of the consultation exercise were reported to the Executive Councillor and the leaflet and strategy amended following consideration of the comments received. The leaflet was adopted as a Supplementary Planning Document on the 23 February 2009.
