Dormice are rare – there are fewer than 30,000 left in the UK and they are quite unlike any other native creature. They live mainly in tree canopies and need diverse habitats to survive. If we find dormice in an area, we know it is a rich wildlife habitat.

Dormice on your Doorstep! is a project that aims to protect and maintain the habitats that support these elusive creatures. Find out more at www.dormice.org.uk. The project includes:

  • A survey to find out where dormice are and how far they travel
  • Providing advice to landowners and supporting them to enter the Environmental Stewardship Scheme
  • Raising awareness about dormice through walks, talks and work with schools and community groups
  • Creating and managing habits and providing training courses

The project began in November 2005 and will run for three years. It is funded by South Gloucestershire Council, Bath and North East Somerset Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, English Nature and the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
