A breathing place for people and wildlife
The local community living in Emersons Green benefits from a number of green spaces that provide space for people to enjoy the open air and get closer to nature. The main park, situated behind the library has a kickabout area and play equipment for toddlers and young people. Brooks feed into a series of ponds nearby, created to reduce the risk of flooding and to provide a haven for wildlife including mallard ducks and herons. A green lane runs through the heart of the area and provides a cool tranquil area to discover old trees and hedgerows full of birdlife. As you emerge from the green lane you come across the common. This green field is managed for the benefit of wild flowers and small mammals and is a small reminder of the area's past.
Access for all
The open spaces around Emersons Green have been designed to make access around the area easy for people in wheelchairs and pushchairs. Its flat terrain makes cycling a popular option for commuting and for families. Accessible parking bays are available along Emersons Way and within the retail park.
A rich heritage
As you walk or cycle through the network of paths in Emersons Green you quickly come across clues to the area's past. Coal mining and agriculture were the main industries in the area and relics of this past can be seen if you look in the right places. The Wild Roots project aims to work with the local community to identify these special features and raise awareness of their significance.
Become a friend
The park area is managed by South Gloucestershire Council whilst the Green Lane and common is managed by the parish council. Over the coming year we are looking to set up a friends group to help look after the green space. Similar groups run environmental events like bat walks and owl prowls and hold practical conservation days. All events are planned to be entertaining and interesting and are a great way to meet new people.
