Essential safety works on Keynsham Canal Bridge

14 May 2008

Essential safety work on Keynsham Canal Bridge near Willsbridge will mean some traffic diversions over the coming weeks.

An inspection by highways engineers of the bridge has found that it needs to be strengthened to ensure that it remains safe to use.

The works have been planned to start on 27 May 2008 and are expected to take approximately 16 weeks to complete. While work is taking place temporary traffic lights will be installed on the A4175 allowing alternate one-way traffic across the bridge.

The bridge will also be completely closed to all traffic for four or five weekends (10pm Friday to 5am Monday) to carry out repairs which cannot be carried out safely with the bridge open. This has been planned to take place at weekends to minimise disruption and traffic will be diverted along the A4174.

Signs will be erected on site to provide advance notice of the exact closure dates.

Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to cross the bridge while the work is being carried out. Bus services will continue as normal during the works but there will be changes to services during the weekend closures. Details of the diversions can be found at www.southglos.gov.uk/keynshamcanalbridge

South Gloucestershire Council apologises for any inconvenience this essential work will cause and will aim to minimise disruption as much as possible.
