THORNBURY U3A
Thornbury University of the Third Age continues to be a thriving group within the local community. The term ‘university’ may appear a little misleading as there is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained. It is purely a self-help organisation for people no longer in full time employment. It provides educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a very friendly environment. There is a huge variety of groups on offer, including archaeology, dancing, book club, languages and theatre visits. Members can join as many groups as they choose, although in some cases there may be a waiting list. They may also need to pay the costs, if any, of materials, a contribution towards the cost of refreshments and if required, the hire of premises. The majority of meetings are held during the day and some in the home of the group leader. If anyone is looking for something to do in retirement, or semi-retirement, the U3A offers a friendly, entertaining and supportive way to enjoy new activities or to continue with present ones. New members are always welcome. YATE & SODBURY DISTRICT U3A
Yate & Sodbury District U3A was founded in 2005 and from small beginnings now has almost 700 members with many successful groups such as indoor curling, badminton, keep fit and gentle exercise, boules, book clubs, bridge and history. The time is ripe to develop further, not only with the introduction of new groups and activities suggested by its members, but also by sharing interests and information with other local U3As and with the national organisation. Y&SD U3A has much to learn and much to give, never losing sight of the fact that the association is here to serve the interests of its members.
