Educational psychologists have a first degree in psychology (or equivalent) and are trained teachers with several years of teaching experience. They have a postgraduate qualification in educational psychology and are eligible for 'chartered psychologist' status after completing one year of supervised work as an educational psychologist.
From late 2004 all psychologists - including educational psychologists, will be subject to statutory regulation with the UK Health Professions Council. It is planned to extend professional training in educational psychology to a three-year training doctoral programme from the current one year masters degree, probably commencing in 2005 or 2006.
