Food labelling

Food labels provide us with information so that we can choose between foods.

Food manufacturers must follow clear guidelines about what labels can and can't show. For example, simply stating 'paté' on a container of paté isn't enough because there are many kinds. The label must say what sort of paté it is.

A label must also tell us if the food has undergone a process, such as being smoked or dried. If you purchase a food product and you think the labelling is misleading then you can complain to us.

You can find out more about food labelling on the Food Standards Agency website.
