Council tax appeals

If you think your council tax bill is wrong you should contact us immediately. You can appeal if you think that:

  • Your bill is incorrect - for example if you think that you should receive a discount
  • Your property should be exempt from council tax
  • You are not the person responsible for paying the council tax but we have sent you a bill

You should continue to pay your council tax whilst you are appealing.

How do I appeal?

You need to contact us in writing, giving full details of why you are appealing against your council tax bill.

We will look into your appeal within two months. If you disagree with our final decision or we have not acted within the two-month period, you can appeal to a valuation tribunal.

What happens at a valuation tribunal?

The tribunal will ask you to appeal in writing, stating which decision you disagree with and why. You will then be contacted to arrange a date for a hearing. Hearings usually last up to a day. You do not have to pay costs unless you choose to employ a professional to represent you, such as a solicitor or surveyor.
