Dog warden news

Police Dog & Handler

A happy ending!

One of our stray Rottweilers has made it as a fully trained police dog. Pictured here with his handler, he can now look forward to an active, interesting life, which is what all dogs should have.

Hanham Common Dog Show

Celine Jacobs, one of the South Gloucestershire Council dog wardens, attended a dog show at Hanham Common on Saturday 19th May with a display promoting responsible dog ownership. The dog show was raising money for HEART Rescue (Homing and Emergency Animal Rescue Team). Although there was a spot of rain it didn't spoil the day. Lots of money was raised for charity and both dogs and dog owners had a good time. Celine was pleased to see that all the dog owners were responsible. They cleaned up after their dogs and the dogs were all kept under good control. Celine was also pleased with the performance of her own dogs in the show. Her lurcher came fourth in the 'most handsome dog' category and her giant crossbreed came third in the category of 'best puppy'. She said afterwards that "it was a nice day with lots of interest from people about what our job involves. I gave out two hundred leaflets and poo bags and so hopefully more people will be aware of us and what we do".

Rehoming news

During 2006 the dog wardens collected 406 stray dogs, 46 more than the previous year. Of these, 264 were reunited with their owners, 67 were rehomed and 65 were given refuge by other rescue centres. These rescue centres work very hard to find our strays new homes and we would like to thank them for all of their efforts.

Of the remaining 10 strays, 4 joined the police force or the prison service and another one was taken on by a security company. Unfortunately five of our strays had to be put to sleep either because they had severe behaviour problems that meant that they could not be safely rehomed or because they were very ill and we were advised by a vet that this was the kindest course of action. No dogs were put to sleep during 2006 for any other reason.

Anyone interested in offering a home to one of our strays should contact the dog wardens or use the on-line form. Please help us to rehome our strays by telling family and friends about our dog of the week page.
