Planning application forms and guidance

Two men examining a plan

Planning applications can be submitted to South Gloucestershire Council in two ways; electronically through the Planning Portal online application service or in paper format.
If you wish to apply electronically you should click on the “Apply online at the Planning Portal" Link situated on the right of this webpage. The intelligent nature of the electronic form will help customers identify the correct planning consent required for the development, assist with calculation of planning fess and provide a link to our Planning Application Requirements (PAR). Please note: this method is the only route for submitting a planning application electronically to South Gloucestershire Council.
Alternatively you may wish to submit your application in paper format. Copies of all types planning application forms are available to download below.
Select -
Householder applications – if you are applying for planning permission for “domestic” works within the grounds of a single dwelling. These forms cannot be used for flats, erection of new dwellings or non residential premises.

Planning applications - if you are applying for full planning which would exclude householder applications (as described above). These forms are to be submitted for a wide range of development activities including, non residential premises, change of use and large scale proposals.

Outline & Reserved matters applications – if you wish to apply for outline permission or approval of reserved matters. These applications are not suitable for householder applications.

Conservation, heritage & natural environment applications – if you wish to apply for consent for works to: listed building, trees covered by a tree preservation order, trees in a conservation area, removal of hedgerow or conservation consent.

Prior notifications – if you wish to ascertain whether prior approval is required for certain types of telecommunications or agricultural development or proposed demolition of buildings.

Miscellaneous planning applications – if you wish to apply for development requiring   advertisement consent, approval of conditions reserved by condition (different from a reserved matters application), removal or variation of condition or certificate of lawfulness which ascertain whether the development is or would be lawful for planning purposes.

With each planning application form you will find the associated Help Text and a Planning Application Requirement checklist (sometimes known as a validation checklist). Planning fee details can be found on the right hand side of this page under the “Read more” section, along with our Guidance Notes for Planning Application Requirements.

Use of CD ROMS:
While we are willing to consider the submission of applications or supporting information by CD ROM where this will clearly assist in the consultation process or consideration of the application, any submission by CD Rom must be by prior agreement. If agreement has not been sought and given prior to the submission of the application, there is a risk that the application will be returned as invalid.

Please note if you submit the application in paper format we will require three copies of all details, including applications forms, plans and details
