The Environment Grant is currently open to applicants.
South Gloucestershire Council can provide financial support to local groups or voluntary organisations for environmental projects that benefit the local community.
The grant will support projects that help
to achieve the following:
- Conservation or enhancement of our open spaces and countryside
- Protection and enhancement of biodiversity
- Promotion of low carbon, sustainable and healthy lifestyles
- Promotion or improvement of access to our countryside and open spaces
- Increased community involvement in protecting and appreciating the natural and cultural
environment - Appreciation of the natural environment through celebratory events, learning projects, interpretation and the arts.
Project costs that can be supported
include:
- Materials and equipment
- Tools
- Running a special event
- Training
- Newsletters, leaflets and interpretation panels
- Contractor, consultant and volunteer costs.
Who can apply?
- Friends groups / conservation groups
- Local interest groups
- Youth groups
- Community associations
- Parish and town councils.
How much can I apply for?
Successful applicants can receive up to 80% of total project costs where there is demonstrated
community involvement and environmental benefit. The minimum contribution required from you is 20%; this can be made up of cash, materials in kind or the value of volunteer labour.
The value of your volunteer time should be calculated at £7 per hour/ £50 per day for
general unskilled labour, and £18.75 per hour/ £150 per day for specialist, skilled labour.
There is no maximum grant set; however, it is unusual for us to award more than £2500 unless
the project is exceptional. It is also unusual for us to award more than one grant to the same organisation in any one year.
Conditions of Grant
- Project must be within South Gloucestershire
- Project must have community involvement
- Project must benefit local environment or community
- Agreed project plan (if required) must be adhered to
- Grant report form must be submitted on completion of project

Other environmental grant schemes
There are a number of local grant giving bodies that groups can apply to. One such fund is the South Gloucestershire Environment Body, who's website link is on the right.
Community groups looking for grants to undertake environmental projects are advised to look at the 'Searching for grants' webpage, which gives access to a service called GRANTnet, which can help identify suitable funding and grants for activities and projects.
