How many Smidsy accidents?
An in-depth study of motorcycle accidents carried out by the Department for Transport estimates that 'Right of way' accidents (Smidsy accidents) account for slightly more than 25% of all motorcycle accidents.
Our statistics suggest that, in some locations, the percentage of Smidsy accidents could be higher than 80%*
*These statistics are based on information provided on police record forms filled out at the scene of an accident involving a motorcycle. While all efforts are made to ensure this information is correct, the final figures relating to Smidsy accidents are only estimates.
Where?
We have looked closely at all motorcycle accident 'hotspots' in South Gloucestershire (where there have been more than four motorcycle accidents within the last 3 years).
We also looked at specific lengths of road where there was a high percentage of motorcycle accidents, compared with the total number of accidents.
This campaign is targeted at the locations with the highest proportion of Smidsy accidents.
