Bulky waste - collection of large items

Sofa Project van

Bulky waste are items that are too big to fit in your wheelie bin. We collect up to three bulky items at a charge of £17.00 per collection.

If you receive Income Support,  Pension Credit or Income Related Job Seekers Allowance your household is entitled to two free bulky waste collections, per household, per financial year. We require proof that you are in receipt of Income Support, Pension Credit or Income Related Job Seekers Allowance.

To arrange a collection please select the Request a bulky waste collection form - see 'Do it now' Do it online - Rubbish, waste and recyling on the right-hand side of the page. If you prefer you can contact our StreetCare Helpdesk on 01454 868000 who will be able to make the appropriate arrangements for you.

Payment

You can pay for your bulky waste collection by either credit card or debit card. Alternatively, you can pay by cheque. Please send a covering letter and cheque made payable to “South Gloucestershire Council” and send it to:

South Gloucestershire Council, Street Care
PO Box 2078
Council Offices, Castle Street
Thornbury
BS35 9BJ

Please note that:

  • One-Stop-Shops cannot accept cash payments
  • Only items specified at the time of booking will be collected.
  • Items must be out by 7.00 am on the day of collection
  • It must be household rubbish – the sort of thing you would normally take with you when you move house.
  • We will only take three items at a time - for instance a three-piece suite counts as three items. With this in mind, you may like to wait until you have three such items before you ask for a collection.
  • We will charge for collecting fixtures and fittings such as doors, radiators or bathrooms. This is because we do not think it right to spend money on collecting materials left behind by traders or by residents doing DIY. The cost of collecting fixtures and fittings is £56.30 for a full load and £22.00 for a single item. Cut down garden waste and rubble needs to be inspected first and then quote given.
  • Please leave any items for collection whre you leave your waste for collection. Our staff are not allowed to enter houses, sheds or garages because of insurance conditions.
  • Please make sure fridges and freezers are empty of food. They will be taken to a specialist plant where damaging CFC gases are removed, and the fridge is recycled.

Reusing household goods

If you have unwanted household goods, try giving them to somebody who can reuse them rather than requesting a bulky waste collection. The Sofa Project in Bristol will accept reusable items of furniture and electrical appliances and sell them on at a low price to families on low incomes or else recycle them.

The Sofa Project cannot accept:

  • Soft furnishings which do not carry the label 'carelessness causes fires'
  • Built-in appliances
  • Gas appliances
  • Extra large wardrobes
  • Display units

More details are available on their website or by contacting them on 0117 954 3567.

The Kingswood Furniture Project accepts reusable items of furniture only, please call them on 0117 961 6226 for more details.

The British Heart Foundation will also collect some used furniture and electrical items free of charge

Important points to note

  • The final decision on whether the items are acceptable for resale lies with their drivers. If, on viewing the items they decide they cannot resell them then they will not take the items away. • 100% of the profits raised from the sale of these items fund the continuing work of the British Heart Foundation.
  • It would be helpful if, when you call the British Heart Foundation that you mention you were referred by the Council.
