Most bus stops in South Gloucestershire are provided and maintained by First which operates the majority of commercial bus services. The council provides and maintains more than 500 bus stops which are situated either in roads served exclusively by council-supported services or at places served by several bus companies, such as Yate Shopping Centre. Each year, the council spends over £1500 on bus stop maintenance, principally to repair accident damage and vandalism. In the case of road traffic accidents, the cost of repair is recovered from the motorist's insurance company.
Maintenance of bus shelters is the responsibility of the owners. Adshel provides shelters (normally with advertising displays) under an agreement with the council. In addition many parish and town councils provide shelters. South Gloucestershire Council owns a number of shelters in the Kingswood urban area. A few, mostly on private land, are owned by other organisations.
Other facilities at bus stops (such as hardstandings, seats, timetable displays and litter bins) may be provided by the owners, South Gloucestershire Council or the parish or town council.
How do I report damage to a bus stop or shelter?
Damage to bus stops should be reported to us. If the stop is owned by the council, the damage will be assessed and appropriate action taken. Otherwise, the owners will be notified as soon as possible.
How do I request a new bus stop?
Along roads served by First commercial bus services, write to the company's head office. In other places, please contact us.
How do I request a new bus shelter?
For shelters in areas covered by them, please contact your local parish or town council. South Gloucestershire Council may be able to give some financial assistance.
