Would you like to care for young children? Would you like to help provide fun and learning opportunities?
Day nurseries provide full- or part-time childcare for children between 0 and 5 years of age. Most nurseries provide a full range of activities which support children's learning through a play-based approach. These activities need careful planning to ensure that young children have access to a broad and balanced curriculum which promotes all areas of development. Nursery staff are also usually expected to undertake regular observations and assessments of children within their care and need to be knowledgeable about child development or willing to undertake training.
At least half the staff team within a day nursery need to be qualified, so there will be opportunities to train and gain qualifications. Training can be through a study-based approach, for example at a college (DCE or CCE qualification) or through an NVQ award which allows you to complete a qualification in your workplace.
Day nurseries can take trainees as young as 16 years of age, but they do not count towards the staff ratios and must be supervised at all times until they are 17 years of age.
