  • 16,701 hours of learning sessions took place in South Gloucestershire libraries last year, an increase of 32% on the previous year.
  • The average cost per visit to a South Gloucestershire library is £2.99 compared with £3.42 in other English unitary authorities.
  • 85% of adults who left us comments after attending events said they learnt something new.

We said that unplanned closures would be no more than 1% of our annual opening hours : we closed for just 16 hours for emergencies last year out of a total of 25,000 opening hours

We said we would replace 10% of stock each year through purchase: we replaced 13% of stock through the purchase of new items. In addition 14% of stock was circulated around the libraries to ensure a new range of stock is available throughout the year

We said 75% of requests for specific items would be supplied within 15 days: we actually supplied 78%within the target

2010/2011 highlights

Bradley Stoke, Hanham and Winterbourne buildings were extended and Kingswood refurbished as part of the programme to develop the service for the future.

Over 5000 children joined the Space Hop summer reading challenge, reading over 20,000 books, helped by staff and 43 volunteers Library users knitted a library poem letter by letter, written especially by poet Marcus Moore, who unveiled and read it on National Poetry Day.

We celebrated World Book Night on 5 March 2011 with 11 different events in 12 libraries

BBC Bristol broadcast from Kingswood Library to launch the First Click basic computing
course We launched a 24/7 E‐audio book Collection. Anyone with a library membership card, PC and an MP3 player can download hundreds of free audiobooks through the website.
