Safety in the kitchen

Cooking is fun and children should be encouraged to participate. It is vital however that safety comes first in the kitchen.
  • Always wash your hands before and after handling food
  • Wash your hands between handling uncooked and cooked food
  • Always use a separate chopping board and knife for handling raw and cooked foods
  • Keep sharp knives away from children
  • Always supervise children in the kitchen, especially when using kitchen utensils
  • Keep young children away from hot saucepans, cookware and utensils
  • Always ensure saucepan handles are pointing inwards on the hob to avoid them getting knocked accidentally
  • Make sure food containers are clean and regularly washed after use
  • Always ensure food is cooked thoroughly - especially meat, pulses and egg-based recipes
  • Take great care with hot oil. If hot oil catches fire, turn off the heat and carefully use a damp cloth or fire blanket to smother the flames. NEVER pour water on hot or burning oil!
