Patchway - Minutes of previous meeting Please note that Eileen Abbott left the library committee in January 2008. Sadly Peter Eddon has died.

Matters arising At the April meeting members of the committee voted on the proposed amalgamation of Patchway and Filton Library committees. Patchway committee voted 3:1 in favour of the amalgamation. Filton Library Committee voted against joining the committees. So the motion is defeated.
Despite very windy and wet conditions the library managed to raised £74 at Patchway festival. Kathy noted that numbers of people attending seemed lower than last year.
It was noted that the South Gloucestershire council member is not attending Library Committee Meetings. Clare to request that they attend or send apologies if they are unable to.

Correspondence Tim gave the minutes of Downend and Staple Hill Library Committee Meetings to Clare.

Feedback from "Looking to the Future" Library Strategy Roadshow Bob apologised for being unable to attend the Library Strategy Roadshow on Saturday 28 June. Tim said it was worthwhile and he has fed back his comments to Martin asking for increased resources and more books. It was noted that lots of the library committee groups shared the similar ideas. Clare to post out copies of the feedback from Library Strategy Roadshow to all committee members.

Librarian’s report There was a discussion of a previously circulated report. Clare also informed the committee about several other activities that the library has become involved in recently:
A pre-school have started to bring children into the library on a regular basis The local history talk on Monday 7 July by Dr Martin F Davis called “Were you here then …” was very popular with 54 people attending. A local history film will be shown on Monday 6 October at 7pm about Little Stoke Farm from the mid 1940s to the mid 1950s.
The library is now visiting the Lunch Club for older people at community centre on a monthly basis.
|
Performance News and Quarterly Statistics The Quarterly Statistics for April to June 2008 were discussed. Visits have increase by 5%, Storytime numbers have increased and children’s book issues have also increased.
The committee noted that the number of enquiries was down, Clare said that it is difficult to monitor enquiries accurately and that many enquiries are now done through the enquiry centre.
Tim asked why there were no figures for reservations on the Quarterly Stats. Clare to investigate. There was a discussion about what foreign language books and foreign language CDs were needed by the local community. Clare to see if Community Learning and people at Planning for Real meetings have information on ethnicity of the local population. Clare to ask staff who work on the library counter what foreign language material they think the local community needs.
The committee suggested that notices advertising foreign language books and CDs and the availability of information in foreign languages could be put up in the library. Clare to put some information in Patchway People about borrowing foreign language books and CDs from the library.

Patchway Library Service Plan 2008/2009 The Patchway Library Service Plan relates to the Corporate Service Plan for South Gloucestershire Council.
Clare to add the library committee to the “Community Engagement and Social Inclusion” section of the Patchway Library Service Plan 2008/2009.
The committee noted that the library needs to put dates into the Service Plan and asked for jargon and abbreviations to be explained.
Martin Burton will be attending a meeting to discuss where the new library will be based. Bob asked if there would be changes to the level of staffing when the new library was built. He was assured that the level of staff would not be reduced.
Bob asked if there had been any changes to the library finances recently. Money that had been allocated for new windows will not be spent at present because the windows are in good condition and do not need replacing.
Bob asked about providing computer courses for older people who are unable to attend the Community Learning courses which are for people to improve their skills for work. Clare will ask Nic who runs the Patchway, Filton & the Stokes Volunteer Bureau about providing volunteers to run computer courses. |
Any other business There was a discussion about getting younger people to join the library committee. Patchway Community College sixth formers were supposed to attend the committee but the timing of meetings may make it difficult for them to attend. It was noted that the Teenage Focus Groups at Yate do input into the library committee. The committee asked if it was possible for staff to get informal feed back from children on Teen Day and also from Storytime and Rhymetime sessions.
Thanks from the Committee to the library staff and the Reading Group for organising a very successful Quiz Night on Wednesday 9 July.
