South Gloucestershire Council is made up of 70 elected councillors (also known as members). Since the last election (3rd May 2007), the political balance is as follows:
- 34 Conservative councillors
- 27 Liberal Democrat councillors
- 9 Labour councillors
Councillors have responsibility for: Acting in the interests of the whole community
Encouraging the community to participate and become involved in decision-making
Listening to the needs of local people and taking their views into account when considering policy proposals and decision-making
Being the ultimate policy-makers
- Representing their communities and dealing with their constituents' concerns
- Contributing to decision-making and scrutiny
- Participating in the activities of anybody to which they are appointed and reporting back to the council
