Keeping your bike safe

A cycle stand

The threat of bicycle theft can deter people from cycling.

In order to encourage people to use their bicycles, we have installed bicycle racks and lockers all over South Gloucestershire, especially at transport interchanges like rail stations.

We also encourage employers to do the same at workplaces. If you think there is a place where new cycle locking facilities would be useful – please let us know.

What can I do to keep my bike safe?

Lock it

Always lock your bike when you leave it, even if you're just popping into a shop for a minute. It's better to fit a steel D-shaped shackle lock recommended by your bicycle dealer or the police rather than a padlock and chain. If your wheels come off easily, remove the front wheel and lock it to the frame and back wheel, using a second lock if necessary.

Wherever possible, you should lock your bike to something solid like a lamp post or railings. We are also increasing the number of cycle stands around South Gloucestershire.

Reserve a cycle locker

We have secured cycle lockers at Yate, Filton Abbey Wood and Bristol Parkway stations, so people can cycle, park and ride.

Some of the lockers at Filton Abbey Wood, Yate and Bristol Parkway are free and you must secure these with your own D-lock. They are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

There are also lockers with keys at Yate and Filton Abbey Wood. These are for hire by people who want to use them regularly. There is a small annual charge to pay and you may have to put your name on a waiting list. There is more information on the application form.

Record it

The police recover thousands of stolen bicycles every year. Most have to be auctioned because there is no way of knowing who the owners are. If you fill in a police record form and take a clear colour photo of your bicycle, you can hand these to the police if your bicycle is stolen.

Postcode it

Ask your bicycle shop to stamp your postcode onto your bike frame and attach a 'Coded Cycle' sticker to deter thieves. Ask your bicycle shop for advice.
