Dogs tend to defend their territory from other dogs or humans, whether it is their kennel or their owner's house. Even friendly dogs will bark when you enter their territory. How to deal with an angry dog:
- You should try not to reward a dog with your actions when it becomes aggressive, for example by leaving its territory
- Take a look at how a dog reacts. If it stays put or approaches wagging its tail in a low position, it is probably friendly. But if it stiffens up and snarls or shows its teeth, you should be wary and probably go no further
- Never run from a strange dog as it is likely to chase and you may end up getting bitten. If you are unsure, don't turn away from the dog. Instead, back away slowly
- Try not to show fear, as a dog will recognise this. Dogs attack very rarely, so you should not feel anxious every time you meet a dog
- Do not stare at a dog, as it might understand this as a threat
