Noise Action Week

Noise Action Week aims to promote practical solutions to everyday noise problems. Noise can cause disruption and distress to everyone – at home, at leisure, at work and at study. National research shows that half the population say noise affects their quality of life and in 2007 around a million people said they had moved home because of noisy neighbours. Meanwhile, 70% of people are bothered by noise in their neighbourhood.

For Noise Action Week everybody is urged to:

  • Consider the noise they make and the effect it has on others
  • Consider the noises that disturb them
  • Use our practical solutions to everyday noise problems

Environmental Protection are using Noise Action Week (19 - 23 May 2008) to encourage patrons of licensed premises when outside to consider the potential noise nuisance to local neighbours.

Since the smoking ban came into force 1 July 2007 and the licensing hours extensions there has been a noticeable increase in noise complaints.

During the week officers will be visiting landlords, providing advice leaflets and small signs for display in outside areas to encourage patrons to keep noise levels down.
