Event: Chair of South Gloucestershire Council Shirley Holloway will loan the first energy meter to a library service user

Location: Kingswood Library, High Street, Kingswood, South Gloucestershire, BS15 3AR

Time / Date: 3pm, Friday 10 July

Libraries in South Gloucestershire will be helping people to save money and go green by lending out energy meters.

The meters in libraries are the latest council initiative to help residents improve the energy efficiency of their homes and save money.

The meters measure electricity consumption, so householders can easily see the difference made by turning off appliances instead of leaving them on stand-by, and the amounts of energy different equipment can use.

Chair of the Council Shirley Holloway will loan the first energy meter to a library service user.

The meters will be available to loan for three weeks and can be reserved if none are available.

They have been supplied by energy company E-On as part of an initiative with Ofgem, the gas and electricity regulator.

The availability of energy meters in libraries follows the extra £150,000 funding the council is investing in its ‘Warm and Well’ scheme for the installation of more energy efficiency measures in local homes.

Councillor Heather Goddard, executive member for communities, said: “These meters are a great way for South Gloucestershire residents to find out how much electricity they are using.

“Looking at ways to reduce the amount we use is not only good for the environment, but it can save money as well, which is really helpful for those households that are struggling in the current economic climate.”

She added: “This latest initiative comes not long after the considerable additional investment we put into the installation of more energy efficiency measures in our residents’ homes to reduce both their carbon emissions and energy bills.”
