St Nicks FC and Cadbury Heath FC reach National Finals

Two of South Gloucestershire’s girl’s football teams graced the turf at Leicester City’s Walkers Stadium last month as they represented Gloucestershire and the South West in the national finals of the Tesco Cup.

St Nick’s U16s and Cadbury Heaths U14’s began the journey to the finals back in January overcoming Gloucestershire opposition to win the county cup and progress into the regional stages of the competition at Bath University.

Both sides impressed in their respective regional competitions with St Nicks winning three of their four games without conceding a goal and Cadbury Heath winning three and scoring 16 goals through their four matches.

At the Walkers Stadium Cadbury Heath drew Essex FA’s Herongate Girl’s FC in the second semi-final and despite frequently going close could not overcome a Yasmin Nugent free kick eventually going down 1-0.

St Nicks overcame Birmingham’s Leafield Athletic in their semi-final coming back from 1-0 to win in extra-time to set up a final against Southern England and the chance to represent England at the City of Manchester Stadium.

Despite their best efforts St Nicks could not come back from a first minute onslaught by the Southerners and eventually went down 2-0 with the heroics of St Nicks goalkeeper Abigail Evans preventing a third and earning her the Keeper of the Tournament accolade.
