Ethnic Minority Achievement Service - EMAS

Introduction

The Ethnic Minority Achievement Service works as part of the School Improvement Team in Children and Young People’s Services. It is a consortium team working from South Gloucestershire in partnership with Bath and North East Somerset and North Somerset. It also has links and some shared projects with Bristol Ethnic Minority Achievement Service.

The Service works to support schools in planning and delivery of services to minority Ethnic children, young people and their families.

Aims

With schools with higher numbers of minority ethnic pupils EMAS aims to :

  • Train a senior member of staff to take responsibility for work with minority ethnic pupils within the school
  • Support the school in:
    • auditing provision for minority ethnic pupils
    • devising a school plan to raise their attainment and address their needs
    • the implementation of its plan     

through consultancy, central and school based training , pupil monitoring, network meetings, projects, telephone and on line support.


With schools and settings with very few minority ethnic pupils EMAS aims to:

  • Provide casework support
  • Provide central training for teaching staff working with a minority ethnic pupils identified as in need
  • Provide access to other central training, telephone and on line support

Projects

The Service is involved with a number of projects:

  • UWE Ethnic Minority Higher Education Project – which provides mentoring and tutoring for Y6-9 minority ethnic pupils in some schools
  • The Windsor Junior Fellowship – a Bristol based project aimed at Y10 and 11 minority ethnic pupils
  • Multilingual multi modal project – primary schools produce bilingual materials for use in schools in English and other languages spoken in the school, using multi media.

The Service has strong links with local minority ethnic groups and with other sections of Children and Young People’s Services. It works in partnership with other agencies as appropriate.
