Centre of excellence for transport work

South Gloucestershire Council is designated a Centre of Excellence for the quality of its transport work – one of only 17 local authorities to achieve this status.

This award is given by the Department for Transport to those local authorities that are rated highly for their transport work. It means we will help lead the way in sharing knowledge and best practice with other local authorities in the country.

Why has the council become a centre of excellence?

  • One thousand fewer cars per day on local roads – the equivalent of 40 full buses in each direction
  • Fourteen per cent of employees in the main area of South Gloucestershire now car-share
  • Single car occupancy has dropped by 15 per cent to 65 per cent
  • Journeys to work on foot are now six per cent – up from 2.2 per cent in 2001
  • Cycling is up by 20 per cent
  • There has been a twelve per cent drop in the proportion of children taken to school by car
