About 85 per cent of public exposure to radiation is from natural sources – in particular radon gas. Most artificial radiation is from medical equipments, such as X-rays.
We continuously monitor background gamma radiation at one site in Thornbury. The results are summarised in our annual report on air quality.
We maintain a public register of radioactive sources. You can view this at the council offices in Thornbury – please contact us to arrange this.
