Exclusion
When is it appropriate to exclude a pupil from school? What are the procedures for dealing with appeals? How does a headteacher communicate effectively with parents in such difficult circumstances? In all cases there are many issues to consider and the need for an established framework is apparent. The DfES has drawn up detailed guidance on when and how exclusion should be implemented and procedures for appeals against exclusion.
The 2006 guidance appears in full on these pages, including model letters for handling different stages of exclusion procedures. It may also be useful to read the DfES discussion paper on the prevention, management and funding of school exclusions 'Working together on exclusions'.
There are training materials available in the 'Other websites' section of this page.
Data collection
A termly exclusion data collection arrangement began in 2003. Here you can access:
- The letter informing all LEAs of the new arrangement
- The dataset that the department will be using to collect information
- The national standard list of 'reasons for exclusion' that all LEAs are required to use when reporting information about exclusion to the department
This letter provides clarification regarding the termly exclusion data collection survey and pulls together other information previously sent to LEAs. Under the Antisocial Behaviour Act of 2003 parenting orders are available following a permanent exclusion or a second fixed-term exclusion within 12 months. On the 'Read more' section on this page you can access the relevant DfES guidance.
