Residents parking schemes are intended to protect certain on-street parking spaces for people who live in the respective areas. Residents parking schemes identify areas where residents or their visitors can park provided they have a residents parking permit.
Setting up a residents parking scheme is a lengthy process. They are established by a traffic regulation order and can only be introduced after carrying out a lengthy consultation and legal process.
Enforcement
From July 2007, South Gloucestershire Council took over the enforcement of parking regulations from the police. Once the scheme is established there may be more scope for enforcing residents parking and further consideration will be given to introducing such schemes within South Gloucestershire.
Charges
Although no decision has been made on possible residents parking charges, we would have to set up a system to manage the scheme, process applications, check eligibility and issue permits. This would cost a great deal and we would probably have to pay for it by charging for residents' permits. Any changes would form part of a consultation exercise.
