The aim of the Batscape project was to protect and maintain the natural habitats of bats - in particular rare horseshoe bats. It covered the local authority areas of South Gloucestershire and Bath and North East Somerset, where there are lots of good 'bat landscapes'. The project included:
- Surveying and monitoring bat roosts, flyways and foraging grounds
- Developing an 'accessible heritage database' to inform landowners, farmers, the public and decision makers so we can work together to safeguard bats
- Giving advice to landowners and farmers - a public campaign to raise awareness about how farming, food and wildlife relate to each other
- Finding creative ways to get more people involved in conserving their local heritage
The project began in 2003 and finished in November 2006. It was funded by South Gloucestershire Council, Bath and North East Somerset Council, the Duchy of Cornwall, the Heritage Lottery Fund and English Nature.
