Instrumental lessons
Lessons provide:
- A comprehensive and creative musical experience
- An opportunity to play with and share with other young musicians
- A means of self-expression
- A structure to develop self-discipline and general organisational skills
Music-making helps to develop:
- Listening skills
- Co-ordination and motor control
- Self confidence
- Personal responsibility
- Social interaction and general enjoyment of music
Charges
Lessons are arranged by schools through the service but charges to parents are determined by each individual school. Lesson duration and group size are also arranged by the school, based upon music service guidelines.
Help your child to make the most of this opportunity
- Encourage your child to practise at home between lessons and provide a quiet time and space in which to work
- Listen to your child play and be prepared to come to school performances to make them feel that you value their music-making at whatever level of achievement. Never use practice as a punishment
- Encourage them to take part in school music activities and to join an 'area music centre' when recommended by their instrumental teacher in order to broaden their musical experience
- Ensure that they take care of their musical instrument
- Remind your child that success will come with persistence and involvement
- Please feel able to communicate with the instrumental teacher, particularly if there is relevant information towards a better understanding of the needs of your child (e.g. asthmatic, dyslexic, etc.) and to discuss any aspect of the lessons which need clarification
Purchase and hire of instruments
The music service, in conjunction with your school, will give impartial advice about hiring, buying and maintaining instruments if required. The instrumental teacher will advise on specifics such as reeds, strings, books and practice at home as appropriate.
Instruments are not supplied by the music service although schools often have a stock of instruments available for pupils. Otherwise local music shops can supply or hire appropriate instruments. The service is able to give advice and recommendations.
Parents purchasing new instruments can take advantage of the Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme (details from shops or schools).
