Licensing - gambling

Poker Chips
Under the Gambling Act of 2005, we will soon become the licensing authority for gambling within South Gloucestershire.

The act, which comes fully into force on 1st September 2007 gives us the responsibility for determining and issuing premise licences, permits, permissions and registering small society lotteries. The Gambling Commission will issue operating licences and personal licences for commercial gambling operators and personnel working within the industry. It will also regulate remote gambling to include telephone, internet and computer gambling.

Under the act we will enforce the legislation through the following objectives:
  • Preventing gambling from being a source of crime and disorder, being associated with crime and disorder, or being used to support crime
  • Ensuring gambling is conducted in a fair and open way
  • Protecting children and other vulnerable persons from being harmed or exploited by gambling

From 21st May 2007, we will start to receive applications from applicants that currently operate licences or permits under existing legislation.

Further information on the various bodies involved in the new gambling legislation can be found on the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) website.
