Work-life balance

Weighing scales

Introduction

South Gloucestershire Council's Children and Young People Service can offer employers and employees useful information on all of the following topics. To view more information in detail use the 'Read more' section on this page to view and download documents.

Childcare vouchers

We have introduced a scheme for permanent and temporary employees of South Gloucestershire Council whereby part of their salary can be exchanged for childcare vouchers. These vouchers are exempt from national insurance contributions and taxation. Therefore, they represent a saving for employees who use them to pay for childcare.

Helping your employees with childcare information

The Children and Young People Information Service can supply your employees with current information on local childcare. Our range of services covers day nurseries, pre-schools, childminders, out of school clubs, holiday schemes, parent and toddler groups, support groups for parents, nursery education grant information, working tax credit information and information for parents who have a child with additional needs.

Also available is an information pack for those going on maternity leave.

We are happy to come and visit you or your employees to explain our services or offer help to individuals.

Bristol and South Gloucestershire Employers Network

Our local employers network meets twice a year, usually in April and September. Our meetings discuss a range of work-life balance issues. Recent subjects have included:

  • Conducting a workplace audit to identify employee needs in terms of childcare, elderly care, and outside interests
  • Applying for the Department of Trade and Industry Challenge Fund. Three of our members have successfully gained this funding and explained how they went about applying and the way their projects have been implemented

We welcome new members from any type of business, both large and small. Our network is free to join and our meetings are interesting and lively. Please join us if you can. For more information contact Jeannette Edwards on 01454 868116.

Services to local employers

We can offer advice and support on all areas of work-life balance to help employers to attract and retain staff. Recruitment, induction and training are expensive so it is important to look for initiatives which will support existing experienced employees. It is well known that staff who are looked after by their employer are loyal and hard working. There are many initiatives employers can introduce which are completely free of charge and some may even save money. This is particularly important in South Gloucestershire where unemployment is currently below 2%.

The services we can offer are:

  • Regularly updated, free, unbiased information on childcare available in South Gloucestershire
  • Help for employees on eligibility for working tax credit and child tax credit
  • Designing and implementing a workplace audit to establish the childcare and work-life balance requirements of employees
  • Introducing a childcare voucher scheme and an explanation of the saving for both the employer and employee
  • Reserving places in local nurseries
  • Advice on using childminder networks
  • Setting up workplace nurseries
  • Information pack for employees going on maternity leave
