A private hire operator's licence is required if you provide private hire vehicles. It is an offence to operate without a licence and is subject to a maximum fine of £1000.
Before a licence can be issued the council has to be satisfied that you are a fit and proper person. Any previous unspent criminal convictions and disqualifications from running a business will be taken into account.
Application
You need to complete an application form with the appropriate fee. The fee depends on the number of private hire vehicles you intend to provide. A licence will be issued subject to certain conditions, like for example keeping records of bookings.
Private hire operator's licenses must be renewed on an annual basis.
