Drainage

We can assist residents in identifying the cause of blockages in private sewers and ensure that those responsible carry out works to clear blockages or repair defects. We also investigate and resolve complaints relating to discharges from septic tanks and cesspits. It is important to understand the types of sewer however, and who is responsible for maintaining each type.

If a drain serves only one property it is the responsibility of the property owner until it joins a public sewer. This also applies where the drain extends outside the boundary of the property - such asĀ under the road or neighbouring properties.

When the drains of two or more properties join, it is classed as a private sewer from that joint onwards. It is then the joint responsibility of all the owners of the properties, which are connected to it, to maintain it.

Generally, sewers constructed before 1st October 1937 are considered to be public sewers. Responsibility for cleansing and maintaining public sewers rests with the sewerage provider Wessex Water on 0845 600 4600.

If you are a council tenant, and you experience a blockage in a drain or sewer serving your property, you should contact the central repair helpline.
