July 2010 Update
The Council was directed in March 2006 by the previous Secretary of State to amend its Local Development Scheme to include a Gypsy & Traveller Development Plan Document (DPD).
On 6 July 2010 the new coalition government revoked the Regional Spatial Strategy. In revoking the RSS, the Secretary of State has confirmed that “decisions on housing supply (including the provision of Gypsy and Traveller sites) will rest with local planning authorities without the framework of regional numbers and plans”.
As a result, we have put progress with the Gypsy and Traveller DPD on hold until the Council has clarified the implications of this announcement for the DPD.
We are currently consulting on a more general approach to the provision of Gypsy and Traveller accommodation in our draft Core Strategy (Policy CS21, paragraphs 10.62 – 10.68 and the sections on individual development areas - policy CS31) and this can be found on our Core Strategy webpage at http://www.southglos.gov.uk/corestrategy
