Traffic calming

Mini roundabout
The aim of traffic calming is to improve road safety and to improve the environment and quality of life for everyone in South Gloucestershire.

This can include:

  • Speed cushions
  • Chicanes
  • Mini-roundabouts

The impact of traffic calming must be considered on an area-wide basis, as the movement of traffic may be affected over a greater area than the particular road being treated.

Reducing speed

Speeding is a factor in many accidents, so reducing speeds on our roads has been the major aim of our projects. By reducing speeds, traffic calming means that residents, pedestrians and cyclists can live and travel more safely.

Over half of all accidents in which people are injured happen on urban roads with a maximum speed limit of 30mph.

Remember

  • Hit at 40mph, 1 pedestrians in 5 is killed
  • Hit at 30mph, 1 pedestrian in every 10 is killed
  • Hit at 20mph, only 1 pedestrian in 40 is killed
