Community Engagement: Working together with our communities to make a positive difference

All of us, including people living and working in South Gloucestershire, the council and its partners, have a role to play in improving our communities.

The following four priorities for Community Engagement work have been set by South Gloucestershire’s Safer Stronger Communities Strategic Partnership Strategy: “Building Safer Stronger Communities Together”:

Promoting equality and improving cohesion - Creating a fair place for all
Aiming to:
• Reduce inequality, both social and economic
• Reduce the number of people at risk of financial exclusion
• Encourage and sustain cohesion among residents and communities
• Promote equality and build consensus

Priority Neighbourhoods - Focusing resources and encouraging initiative
Aiming to:
• Support community based initiatives that create or retain employment
• Help to make local people better equipped for work
• Increase community ownership and involvement in managing facilities
• Reduce deprivation in our poorest neighbourhoods

Engaging communities in decision making –Listening and improving
Aiming to:
• Ensure that local people have a say in decision making
• Promote democracy at local level
• Work together to plan the future of our communities, villages and towns
• Ensure that future developments provide for the social, cultural, health and education needs of  residents

Supporting each other - Building a stronger community and voluntary sector
Aiming to:
• Recognise the contribution made to our communities through community and voluntary action
• Support, respect and listen to the voice of the community and voluntary sector when making decisions
• Use the skills and talents of the community and voluntary sector to provide local services

Our Community Engagement Teams include: Community learning, Equalities and Diversity, Financial Inclusion and Advice, New Communities, Priority Neighbourhoods, Rural and Parishes, and Voluntary and Community Sector Support. In line with the above priorities these teams can help with…

• Providing opportunities for adults to learn
• Promoting equal opportunities for everybody
• Providing advice and information for those suffering financial exclusion
• Ensuring that new communities integrate well into the wider community and have the facilities to thrive
• Supporting local communities to work on identifying their own needs and take action
• Supporting voluntary and community organisations to develop
