Are you homeless?

You can be classed as homeless if:
  • You have no accommodation in the UK or elsewhere
  • You have no legal right to stay in your accommodation
  • You cannot occupy your existing home because of a court order
  • You haven't any friends or family who are willing to house you
  • You have been evicted illegally
  • You would be at risk of violence by remaining in your home
  • You have a caravan, mobile home or boat, but nowhere to site it

There are other reasons that people become homeless, and your case will be considered.

You are not officially homeless if all the following apply:

  • You have accommodation available
  • You have a right to live in it
  • It is reasonable for you to stay there

This includes accommodation abroad.

Threat of homelessness

We will consider you to be threatened with homelessness if you are likely to become homeless within the next 28 days. This may be because:

  • Your landlord has given notice that you must leave and you have received a possession order from the courts or
  • The relatives or friends you are living with have said you cannot stay or
  • You are at risk of violence in your home
