Advice on renting privately

Renting in the private sector lets you choose the type and location of your new home. Due to the demand for social housing in South Gloucestershire, it may also be the most realistic option for you.

Please see the Read More section for a guide on looking for privately rented accommodation. This section also contains a checklist detailing the things that you should consider when looking for a property and a checklist of things that you should do when you move into your new home.

If you are just looking for a room in a shared house there are a number of websites that may be able to help you. You can access these sites by typing flat share, or room share into an internet search engine. Alternatively, shared rooms are often advertised in local newspapers, or shops.

When you pay a deposit to a landlord, they must protect it using a Government authorised tenancy deposit scheme. This is, because the Government wants to make sure that your deposit is protected so that:

  • Your get all or part of your deposit back, when you are entitled to it
  • Any disputes between you and your landlord or agent will be easier to resolve
