Processing and disposal

Waste transfer and processing facilities

With different types of waste being sent to a range of reprocessing or disposal points, it is necessary to bulk up waste to minimise the transportation costs and the number of vehicles carrying waste.

The transfer stations at Yate and Mangotsfield provide delivery points for refuse collection vehicles. Waste is loaded into large articulated lorries for landfill disposal.

The Yate Sort It!* centre provides sorting and storage for recyclable materials collected through the kerbside Sort It!*service in the northern part of the council area with Mangotsfield Transfer Station serving the southern part.

The new vehicle maintenance depot and offices at Dean Road, Great Western Business Park, Yate (opposite the Sort It!* facilities) were completed in December 2001.

Residual waste disposal

The two transfer stations provide flexibility for bulk transfer of residual waste. Currently SITA have landfill contracts for disposal at landfill sites in Wiltshire and Exeter. In the future, we will no longer be able to take residual (black bin waste) to landfill sites. The UK and European parliaments have set tough targets aimed at drastically reducing the amount of biodegradable waste going to landfill sites. South Gloucestershire council is working in partnership with Bath and North East Somerset and Bristol City councils to provide a range of new waste treatment facilities located in the west of England.

Harnhill - the local council landfill site, was completed in February 2003 and restored during that summer. The council has retained the site licence and long-term aftercare responsibilities for Harnhill landfill site.
