Staff training is a high priority for the Department for Children and Young People. Every new member of staff to the children's social services division receives specific training about the needs and support services available to looked-after children and young people.
The majority of these courses are 'multi-agency'. They are open to staff from a range of organisations and other divisions within the department which ensures that the professionals working with looked-after children and young people know how to work together in their various roles to use creative measures to address the needs of children and young people. The training includes the specific needs of children with disabilities.
We recognise the importance of the experiences of looked-after children and young people. The department runs a course called 'Total Respect' in which young people who have been looked after but have now left our care train social work staff, councillors, managers at all levels and staff from other agencies who work with looked-after children and young people.
